Chapter Twenty-Eight

By the time Elwyn reached Rachel’s house, she was going out of her mind with worry.

“I’ve heard nothing. If this is a kidnapping there’s been no ransom demand. My neighbour from over the road saw Sofia and Len getting into a van. It seemed like Sofia didn’t want to go. Unfortunately, my neighbour didn’t think to get the number plate.”

“He’s a small child, he needs feeding, taking care of. We’ll hear something soon,” Elwyn said soothingly.

“Len has a strict routine. Deviate from it and he gets tetchy.” Rachel dabbed at her tears. “He cries a lot, can be a right pain. I’m afraid that a couple of gangsters won’t put up with his ways. Oh, Elwyn, they might just decide to silence him for good. And if they find out who he is, that he’s Jed McAteer’s son, God knows what they’ll do.”

“Don’t, Rachel. You aren’t doing yourself any good spouting rubbish like that. You’ve no idea what’s happening. Your imagination is running away with you, and giving yourself all this grief for nothing does no one any good. And, anyway, he’s got Sofia. She’ll look after him.”

“There’s only so much she can do though,” Rachel said. “She’s a young woman, built like a beanpole. She’s no match for a couple of blokes.”

Belinda and Alan arrived and busied themselves in the kitchen making a pot of tea. “Elwyn’s right,” Belinda said when she brought it in. “Sofia might be a fraud but she does love kids. I spotted it straight away, that bit of her CV is genuine enough.”

Rachel couldn’t simply ignore what Elwyn had told her. The girl was a fraud and that made her a risk. Rachel had reached the point when she doubted she could take much more. She was quietly going out of her mind listening to all the theories, the possibilities about what might have happened to her son. She was about to burst into tears when her mobile rang. It was Mark Kenton.

“It looks like we’ve found him,” he said. “I’m almost certain it’s him, has to be. No one has claimed the child and he’s causing a right ruck. He was found screaming his head off in the bakery aisle of a supermarket in Audenshaw. He’s in the paediatric department at the hospital now.”

“Is he . . . hurt?”

“No, he was taken there for a check-up just to be on the safe side. He’s just tired and fed up, according to the doctor. Jude has asked if you can pick him up and bring a change of clothes. She’ll run tests on the ones he’s wearing, see if she can get anything on whoever took him.”

Relief didn’t cut it. Rachel had never been in so much terror and pain as she had in the last hour or so, and suddenly it was all gone. She looked at Elwyn, a silly grin on her face. “Good news. He’s been found safe and well. Would you mind taking me to the hospital? I doubt if I could drive.
